Record of the Day: Pagans ‘Nowhere to Run’ (1982)
When Mike Hudson of Cleveland’s Pagans passed away in 2017, the void in that city’s music scene expanded to the point of capitulation, Nowhere to Run its evergreen anthem.
Other than being home to the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame, Cleveland is a city not often mentioned in the scheme of rock ‘n’ roll importance, especially alongside its more outspoken, pretentious New York cousins. Why? Beats the shit out of me. An unjust oddity in an unjust world. It only takes a quick dive into the more prominent bands of the city to understand how crucial an element Cleveland is in the rock n’ roll molecular structure. Without batting an eyelid, the obvious big three come to mind: Rocket From the Tombs, Dead Boys and Pere Ubu. Then there’s proto-punksters Electric Eels and Pagans frontman Mike Hudson’s The Styrenes. Garage rockers The Outsiders. Power-poppers The Raspberries… on and on it goes.
And never, ever forget The Pagans.
